American Business Embraces ”Gamification” 07/09/2553 05:53
Hugh Pickens writes "JP Mangalindan writes that for years psychologists have studied what makes video games so engrossing — why do players spend hours accruing virtual points working towards intangible rewards and what characteristics make some games more addictive than others? Now, companies are realizing that ”gamification” — using the same mechanics that hook gamers — is an effective way to generate business. For example, when Nike released Nike + in 2008, it ”gamified” exercise. ”Place the pedometer in a pair of (Nike) sneaks and it monitors distance, pace and calories burned, transmitting that data to the user”s iPod. The Nike software loaded on the iPod will then "reward" users if they reach a milestone,” writes Mangalindan. ”If a runner beats his 5-mile distance record, an audio clip from Tour de France cycling champ Lance Armstrong congratulates him.” In addition, users can upload their information, discuss achievements online with other users, and challenge them to distance or speed competitions. The result: to date, Nike has moved well over 1.3 million Nike + units."

Google faces more antitrust scrutiny, blames Microsoft again 07/09/2553 05:20
Search giant Google has revealed that it has been approached by the Texas attorney general as part of an antitrust review. This investigation seems to be essentially along the lines of the European one, revealed back in February, looking into whether Google manipulates its search results in order to suppress competition, mainly in the area of price comparison.

Just as in the earlier case, Google has responded to this new investigation by pointing out that the hidden hand of Microsoft can be seen in the complaints received by the Texas AG. Foundem was part of the European complaint too, and is a member of ICOMP, which is sponsored by Microsoft...

Lumix DMC-LX5 review roundup: great hardware for a not-so-great price 07/09/2553 05:02
Reviews are starting to trickle out for Pansonic”s LX3 successor, the DMC-LX5, and so far they all seem to echo similar sentiment. The form factor hearkens back to its Micro Four Thirds darling GF1, at least from the top, with "dinky buttons" (in CNET UK”s words) on the back reminding you of its point-and-shoot bloodline. The pictures are solid if not characteristically warm -- and the ability to simultaneously produce RAW and JPEG files is a nice touch -- as is the choice of either Motion JPEG or AVCHD Lite video. The universal issue with this camera is the price; that £449.99 tag (the equivalent of $691 in US currency) doesn”t quite seem to match the offerings, especially when it”s about on par with entry-level DSLRs with interchangeable lenses (albeit without the slim look). As PhotographyBLOG puts it, Panny”s gotta hard case to make for a camera "that looks, at first glance to be very similar to a £299 model." Hey, a hardware switch for changing the aspect ratio (just above lens barrel; 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, or 1:1) doesn”t come cheap. Much more detail can be found in the reviews below.

Samsung Epic 4G Review: The Fastest Android Phone 07/09/2553 04:52

This one has been a hotly requested item from you all: a review of the Samsung Galaxy S. Samsung sent us their newest Galaxy S phone, the Epic 4G for use on Sprint's WiMAX network. It's the first 4" phone we've reviewed, the first to use Samsung's Hummingbird SoC and the first with a Super AMOLED display.

The CPU performance proved to be on par with the Motorola Droid X and other 1GHz Android offerings, but the GPU performance is a good 30 - 45% better than anything else on the market today. The new Super AMOLED display is also a huge improvement over the AMOLED screens we've seen in other Android phones.

Battery life leaves a lot to be desired as the Epic 4G lasted less than 4 hours in our 3G/4G web browsing tests. We also encountered issues with the phone's GPS receiver as many others have reported.

Overall Samsung's Epic 4G is a nice step forward for Android, but with a few glaring issues it remains imperfect.

Read about it all and more in our full review of the Epic 4G.

Plagiarizing a Takedown Notice 07/09/2553 04:51
ChipMonk writes "Over at hobbyist site OS News, editor-in-chief Thom Holwerda published a highly skeptical opinion of the announcement of Commodore USA”s own Amiga line. Within hours, Commodore USA sent a takedown notice to OS News, demanding a retraction of the piece and accusing the site of libel and defamation. What”s funny is that the takedown notice was mostly copied, with minor edits, from Chilling Effects, a site dedicated to publicizing attempts at squelching free speech. The formatting, line breaks, obtuse references to ”OCGA,” and even the highlighted search terms were left largely intact."

MIT app turns your Android phone into a supercomputer... of sorts 07/09/2553 04:17
Oh, sure -- a few people have called Google”s Nexus One a "superphone," but suddenly, that nickname has taken on a whole new level of meaning. A team of talent from MIT has put its head down in order to concoct a new Android application that can come darn close to solving complex computational problems in just a fraction of the time that it”d take a bona fide supercomputer. The goal here is to let researchers and scientists convert to Google”s mobile OS, but if you aren”t falling for that one, it”s also designed to "let engineers perform complicated calculations in the field, and to better control systems for vehicles or robotic systems." Of course, the models that are hosted on the phone do require a supercomputer to create, but once certain formulas are embedded, the app can then compute approximations in mere seconds rather than hours. Best of all, rbAPPmit is available for download as well speak in the source link below, but we”d probably wait for the (presumably thick) user guide to surface before diving in headfirst.

[Thanks, Alasdair]

Sony Has Lost the PS3 Hacking War 07/09/2553 04:14
YokimaSun writes "Sony may have dealt a major blow to the PSjailbreak sellers, but the release last week of PSGroove, an open source version of the hack, has now opened the floodgates of ports to mobile phones such as the Nokia N900 and Palm Pre. The final kick in the teeth is that a port of the exploit has been released by Waninkoko of Wii custom firmware fame for the Dingoo Handheld, which is a homebrew console that is very popular amongst emulation fans. It makes you smile that you can use one homebrew console to hack another to get homebrew on that console. Awesome." pudge notes that you can apparently do the same with a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator (YouTube video).
